Ted M. Preston, Ph.D., is a professor of philosophy at Rio Hondo College in Southern California. His work focuses on Stoicism, practical philosophy, ethics, and the ways philosophical ideas can be applied to everyday life.

He has taught philosophy since 2001, and his doctoral research examined the practical exercises of the ancient Stoics. His writing and teaching explore philosophy not simply as a subject of study, but as a set of tools for thinking and living well.

Author of Old-fashioned

His book, Old-fashioned: Classic Cocktails and Ancient Wisdom, will be published November 20, 2026. It brings together practical philosophy and mindful appreciation through 52 weekly meditations. Each pairs a classic cocktail with an ancient philosophical passage, commentary, and exercises intended to put philosophy into practice.
